More and more women are entering the civil engineering profession every year. Statistics show that women make up 12% of the civil engineering workforce. Although that statistic seems low it's actually one of the highest across all the engineering professions. Regardless of these numbers women are still leaving their positions and some are even unsure about entering the civil engineering profession.
A study done in 2012 showed that civil engineers had slightly higher than average levels of satisfaction with their jobs. This should provide a boost for everyone in the field. However, the American Society of Civil Engineers still finds that women are leaving their positions. This is a very prevalent issue and needs to be addressed. The diversification within the civil engineering community needs to increase. Women are becoming more and more important in the engineering fields and this needs to be recognized by the professional community. ASCE recommends for current professionals to, "Be aware of your own behavior towards your colleagues and start a discussion in your organization about the kinds of “incivil” behavior" (Wallace). These actions will hopefully lead to more retention of the civil engineering professional community ultimately leading to a more diversified community which can better handle more unique and challenging projects and problems.

In my opinion, this is a good thing because women should work in all majors nowadays. Since they have their own point of view, and they can help the society with their ideas. Moreover, women can notice detailed errors.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your opinion because other people can always bring new and helpful points-of-view which will overall help everyone in the profession.
